The Blue Streaks are coming off a solid 2014 campaign, making it to the second round of the District 3 Class AAAA playoffs. The sour part is that they were eliminated by Section One rival Wilson, 21-7.
Township has the potential to be Wilson's biggest threat in the 2015 Section One race with senior quarterback Erik Benjamin orchestrating an offense that scored 32 points per game in 2014. Benjamin passed for more than 2,000 yards and 23 touchdowns last year and rushed for another four scores.
"We definitely want to establish a better run game this year because we're usually known as more of a passing team so it would be great to have a solid balance of running and passing," Benjamin said. "We have two backs that did very well in team camps in Nate Seprinski and Mat Van Gordon."
Benjamin is confident his team can gain that balance because of the verteran line than is returning.
"Our line is more experienced this year. We have four big guys coming back in Tanner Evans, Allen McCloud, Tim O'Hara and Alex Mancini. All of them have game experience, which is different for our team because we sometimes go into the year a little uncomfortable with the line. This year we have a stronger grip in that area."
Though Benjamin comes into 2015 without most of his weapons from last year, he does have senior receiver John Stutz back. Last season, Stutz collected 29 receptions and a team-high seven receiving touchdowns.
Benjamin is optimistic about his new receivers heading into 2015 however.
"Junior Kade Kubicki will be a surprise this year," Benjamin said. "No one really saw him last year due to an injury early in the season and because he was so raw and young. He has really come into his own this offseason and has done well in our 7-on-7 workouts."
Township will host Wilson in a Section One contest on Oct. 23. The Blue Streaks were the last team to defeat Wilson in a section game back on October 26, 2007.
"It comes down to execution for us," Benjamin said. "We have a lot of potential on this football team but 'potential' is a scary word. We have so much capability but if we don't do the little things right and execute properly, we can't beat teams like Wilson."
