The Pioneers are coming off a successful 2014 season. They recorded an 8-3 record and won their first Section Two title since 2011 before falling to Daniel Boone in the first round of the District 3 Class AAA playoffs.

The story of the offseason however, had little to do with the play on the field. During the summer, starting quarterback Collin "Bear" Shank was admitted to the hospital and had surgery to remove a mass in his brain. Shank was cleared for full contact in early August and will return for his senior season.

“I feel great. I have zero restrictions and I have been going through practices. I’m 100 percent and I’m ready to go,” Shank said. “When the doctor said I was allowed to play football again, it took a lot off my mind and when the doctor told me, it was just heartwarming.”

As a junior, Shank threw for 2,187 yards and 26 touchdowns while rushing for 553 yards and nine scores.

Shank will have some offensive weapons returning with him as well in receiver Chad Gaudino (28 receptions in 2014) and 6-foot-6 tight end Darren Metz (nine touchdowns in 2014).

“It’s definitely a tough schedule to work through but we just have to focus on one game at a time and do what we need to do,” Metz said.

Though it's difficult to pick a favorite in the demolition derby that is Section Two, the Pioneers have to be in the conversation.

“We have the guys that can do it again. That’s the message we’re giving them and because of the bullseyes that’s on us from last year, they have to come harder than ever,” head coach John Manion said.
