No one gave the Eagles much of a chance at the beginning of the 2014 season and those who did wrote them off after they were obliterated 42-0 by Lampeter-Strasburg in Week 5.
How did Cocalico respond?
The Eagles won four of their last five regular-season games and won three playoff games to reach the District 3 Class AAA Championship Game.
"I think we have great assistant coaches that the kids believe in. They believe in our systems offensively, defensively and special teams and they play with a chip on their shoulders," Gingrich said. "They know they aren't the biggest and they aren't the strongest but they know that when they play hard, good things happens."
In 2015, Cocalico likely won't have to play the underdog role with a number of playmakers returning.
The Eagles' veer offense rushed for more than 3,800 yards last year, with 1,973 of them returning in backs DJ Fabiani (805 yards) and Hunter High (721 yards) and quarterback Dante Haines (447 yards). The Cocalico quarterback went down in Week 8 last year with a torn ACL but is primed to make a comeback in his senior year. In Haines' absence, incoming junior Brady Sawyer filled in admirably, helping Cocalico make their big playoff run.
"I learned a lot in the eight games that I started but I also learned a lot just watching things I wouldn't see if I was playing. I was able to see both views and I think that helped a lot too,” Haines said. “I feel confident in what I have to do to help the team get better."
In a loaded Section Two, Cocalico should be expected to finish near the top again.
"We don't overload our kids schematically. We don't have a lot of plays but what we have, we try to execute to perfection," Gingrich said. "It's not always perfect and doesn't look perfect but we strive to coach it that way. We'll keep going at it over and over again until we get it right."
