Last season, Eastern York made its first District 3 playoff appearance since 1990.
After a Week 6 loss to Gettysburg, the Golden Knights ran off four straight wins to close the regular season and secure a spot in the postseason.
"We really came around at the end of the season," Golden Knights head coach Dave Kemmick said.
Eastern finished with 3,014 rushing yards, fifth best in the YAIAA last season, and was led by the duo of Lucas Barshinger and David Livelsberger.
Eastern's run ended in the first round of the district playoffs with a 42-6 loss to Bishop McDevitt. This season, Eastern returns a total of 14 starters, and one of Kemmick's goals is instilling more self-confidence in his players.
Quarterback >> Senior Ryan Kalke takes over for Conrad Rhein.
"I don't expect any drop off at quarterback," Kemmick said. "As a matter of fact, I expect Ryan to be better this year. He has really taken command of the group."
Kalke spent the offseason getting more familiar with the offense. "I've done a lot of learning, like the reads you have to make and just working on the mental part of the game," he said.
Running backs >> Last season, four running backs totaled 400 yards or more, led by Barshinger's 848 and Livelsberger's 891. But that duo has graduated, paving the way for junior Keegan Corwell. Corwell had 604 yards and five touchdowns last season.
"He was a nice surprise last year," Kemmick said of Corwell.
Sam Pollock also will help carry the load.
Receivers >> Sawyer Richardson returns to lead this group. Last season, the Golden Knights totaled just 480 pass yards. At tight end, senior Connor Barshinger also will be back.
Offensive line >> Wyatt Smith will anchor the line. Senior Jake Touchton is one of six returning starters for Eastern.
Defensive line >> Smith, Barshinger and Touchton all return here. Smith registered 25 tackles and four sacks last year.
Linebackers >> Pollock, who made 23 tackles last season, will look to make up for the loss of Lucas Barshinger and his 86 tackles.
Secondary >> Kalke and Richardson will provide the deep lock down for the Golden Knights. Kalke snagged three interceptions and had 29 tackles, including six for a loss last season.
Tommy Hinkle is the team's new defensive coordinator, and "he's already pointed out goals for us to meet on each different aspect of the defense," Kalke said.
"We're not sure who our kicker is yet," Kemmick said. "We're working on that. With returner, we're working on a bunch of guys, we're not sure who is going to be back there."
Save the date >> Week 10 vs. York Suburban. The Golden Knights wrap up the regular season with three straight road games, including the finale at Suburban, which could prove pivotal in the Division II race.
Bottom line >> Lucas Barshinger and Livelsberger took with them 25 of the 39 total Eastern touchdowns from a season ago, and Eastern must find new playmakers.
"I think it's going to be competitive. A lot of (the teams) are in the same spot," Kemmick said.
